From Autumn Equinox to Samhain: a Time for Reflection, Change and Stillness

It’s Autumn Equinox and we’re entering the most mystical season. The leaves change colors, slowly turning the landscapes into a warm golden glow. Dusk presents itself with meadows covered in thick fog, copwebs glittering in the rising morning sun. This season is not only visually beautiful, but also an invitation for self-reflection and mindfulness. Traditionally, Samhain (Halloween) marks a significant event in the Celtic calendar, symbolizing the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It’s a time when we pay tribute to our ancestors and honor those who have passed on before us. Our horses also hold deep connections with previous generations and carry their wisdom within them.

During this transitional period between summer and winter, we should take a moment to pause and appreciate the change of seasons. Acknowledge our own inner transformation and growth throughout the year.

Reflect on the year’s growth:

Spend time in quiet reflection, appreciating all that has been accomplished this year. Write down or discuss your goals for both yourself and your horse as you look forward to the upcoming months.

After seasons of hard work, your body and mind now need some rest. Allow yourself to slow down. You did great so far! Find a peaceful spot at the barn or nearby in nature where you can practice mindful breathing exercises in company of your horse. This can strengthen your bond and create a sense of serenity during this transitional time.

This is also an ideal time to connect with nature and practice gratitude for all that has been given to us.

Practice Gratitute:

Take your horse (or just yourself) on a mindful nature walk. Be present and enjoy the beauty and change your witnessing in nature. Allow yourself to be proud of your achievements. Maybe whisper a „thank you“ to yourself, your horse or nature. Tell your friends and family how grateful you are to have them around. Maybe invite them to a cosy fall dinner.

A different approach to self-reflection and mindfulness could be a photo session. During a session I always invite you to slow down, be fully present in the moment and focus on your emotions, thoughts, and body language.  Breathe deeply, listen to the sounds of nature around you and acknowledge the growth that has occurred within you and your horse throughout this year.
Take it as a mindfulness exercise that can help gain insights into your relationship with your horse and maybe identify areas for improvement.
